Surfing has come a long way since it first reached these shores in the early 1900s and North Devon has played a key part in what has made this activity so popular. The west facing beaches of Woolacombe, Croyde, Putsborough and Saunton pick up those all important Atlantic swells and their gentle sloping shorelines create waves perfect for surfers. These perfect waves combined with its clean, clear waters, long sandy beaches and the relaxed surf vibe has helped make the area a top surfing location and one that is ideal for both the novice and the advanced surfer.
Surfing Lessons in North Devon
Woolacombe has recently been given the Trip Advisor Best Beach in the UK award and we can all see why with its clean safe waters and spectacular scenery. Woolacombe is also a fantastic beach to learn to surf and our team of instructors love to teach here due to its mellow, friendly atmosphere and range of conditions.

H2Outdoor offers you the chance to learn to surf at one of the UK's top surf schools where the highly qualified instructors place the emphasis on quality, safety and fun! The surfing team have a wealth of combined experience in Coaching Surfing and are highly skilled in Surf Lifesaving and Lifeguarding. There can't be a better, safer introduction to this water sport than with our surf school at Woolacombe and we have a range of options perfect for groups, individuals, families, schools, youth organisations and corporate events.
We have a selection of surf lesson packages for you to choose from whether it’s your first time surfing, or you just want a little extra help to improve. If you are new to the sport, we will teach you the basics before entering the water to practise catching the waves and seeing if you can get to your feet. Your instructor will be watching you and giving guidance where needed and maybe even catch a photo of you as you ride the wave towards the shore.
For those that are looking to improve their skills, come and join one of our improver sessions where our instructors will be out with you and offering personalised guidance to get your skills up in the areas needed.
Woolacombe Surf Centre is a British and International Surfing Great Britain Accredited Surf School and a Centre of Excellence.
If I have had a lesson, can I hire the equipment to practise?
Yes not a problem. We have a full equipment hire facility available where you will be able to get all the kit you need to practise those all important skills learnt during your lesson. All equipment can be hired on a daily basis or if preferred we can deliver it to your accommodation for you to use as and when you want during your stay. Make sure that when surfing you are between the lifeguarded zones. Between the Black & White Chequered flags for surf boards and the Red and Yellow flags for body boards. Remember never to go in the water if the Red flag is flying.
Do I need to book?
It is very important to book in advance to avoid disappointment on the day. We are not governed by the tide as with other activities but we fill up fast and can only take a maximum of 8 people per instructor.
How long is a session?
We like to get around 2 hours in the water but you will need to allow longer for getting changed and getting to and from the beach.
Do you have to be a strong swimmer?
All beginner lessons take place in relatively shallow water, where you should always be able to reach the sea bottom, our experienced instructors will be with you the whole time but we do ask participants can swim 50 meters.
Is there an age restriction?
We ask that all participants are 8 years and up. If you are at the other end of the age spectrum, you may be required to provide confirmation from your doctor that they are happy for you to participate in such activities.
Will I need any equipment?
All safety equipment, surf boards and wetsuits are provided within the price of the session however you will need to bring something to wear under the wetsuit (swimwear is ideal). Don’t forget a water resistant sun block if required.
What if the weather is bad?
There is quite a special feeling being in the water when it is raining and we are going to get wet anyway. The only time we need to cancel is if the conditions are dangerous or unsuitable for the group. We have other locations available that may offer more shelter or a different activity suggested if required.
